Program

A new design/build 8,736 SF addition including a social hall designed to accommodate 300 seated at tables and chairs, a warming kitchen, restrooms, and a front entry with covered canopy. The majority of the existing facility was updated with new finishes and energy-efficient lighting.

Comments

Temple Beth Or’s existing facility was suffering from an identity crises since it was originally built as a church. App Architecture was challenged to create a fresh, new architectural identity for the building. The key was to place the addition on the site in such a way as to not require the existing facility to be extensively renovated to efficiently interface with the functions of the existing facility.

A key feature in the new design which operates on many levels aesthetically and functionally is the “bas relief” interior entry wall which acts as a fire separation wall between the new and existing buildings. Its randomly recessed blocks create a play of shade and shadow along the connecting corridor, as a subtle reminder of the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
