Program

This 103,000 SF, single-story facility is designed exclusively for Pre-Kindergarten thru 1st grade students serving the entire Northmont City School District. This unique facility supports learning opportunities that foster each child's growth in five developmental areas: creative, social, emotional, physical and cognitive. The program space includes:
  • Traditional Classrooms
  • Extended Learning Areas
  • Sensory Rooms
  • Small Group Rooms
  • Multi-Media Center
  • Administrative Offices
  • Student Dining Room with a stage
  • Community Gymnasium
  • Support spaces
The traditional classroom spaces are organized into four themed neighborhoods within two pods that wrap around exterior courtyards. Each pod features an Extended Learning Area. These indoor Extended Learning Areas connect easily with the exterior courtyards allowing for learning through self-discovery, imagination and creativity in both the built and un-built environment. The Extended Learning Areas support special inter-active projects such as science experiments and the courtyards have planting beds, butterfly habitats and sensory activities, which will support the indoor science activities.

The overall building plan is organized around a public corridor that separates the educational pods from the public spaces and more dynamic activity spaces such as the Extended Learning Areas, Media Center, Gymnasium and Student Dining.

Small Group Rooms, and a mix of Classroom types and sizes allow for individualized or small group study and tutoring. These spaces also support ancillary educational services such as speech, occupational and physical therapy.

The outdoor environment is sculpted and landscaped to maximize utilization of the existing adjacent creek and to also allow for growth of natural environments such as a meadow and grove of trees. Such environments will become habitats for birds and butterflies to be utilized for extended learning opportunities thru observation and interaction.
