App Architecture 2016 Holiday Greeting

Dayton, Ohio is our home. Whether we live downtown or in outlying areas, Dayton is a city of innovation, discovery, and invention.

A city skyline is something that is formed, and transformed over time by the influences of the natural and built environment. Many citizens, corporations, architects, engineers, builders, designers and artist collaborate on the individual pieces which, when composed together, transform each city into a unique and vibrant environment.

This transformative process is not dissimilar to the history of the Spirograph. Invented by Bruno Abakanowicz between 1881 and 1900. Its original purpose was for calculating an area delineated by curves. With the influence of British Engineer Denys Fishers, this foundational engineering tool was transformed into the toy many of us have known and and loved as children. Years later this invention continues to delight a new generation.

Despite its seemingly random results, the concept behind the spirograph is rooted in mathematics. The intricate designs it produces are knows as epicycles, a mathematical term for the path that one circle creates as it moves along the intro or exterior of the circumference of another circle.

Cities, too, are a balanace of science, mathematics, design which reflect the unique perspectives and visions of their creators and users.

As a stylized and abstracted skyline, the city in this year’s greeting is a compilation of Spirograph images created by each of our staff juxtaposed with the Dayton skyline. The man-made buildings are depicted in gray. They are set against the natural environment that gives it life – the river and the sky which are depicted in color. Together they represent the diversity of life in Dayton, with its innovation and invention.

App Architecture wants to thank each of you who have helped to transform and influence the firm we are today.

Happy Holidays.
